Shree Koldaung Devi Secondary School

We visited Shree Koldaung Devi Secondary School in April of 2017, then April of 2018. This year, we visited the school for the third time. Koldaung Devi Secondary School was one of the many schools that were damaged by the 2015 earthquake. Each year, however, it has been steadily undergoing reconstruction, as seen in the pictures below.

Speaking with the principal, we learned that the school has been using computers as a way to enhance the curriculum, making it possible to compete with other schools closer to Kathmandu. Therefore, there must be enough computers for each students to use. Engineers are a popular profession in Nepal, and knowing how to use Microsoft Office is very useful in finding work. This is why the teachers at Koldaung Devi Secondary School are putting effort into using computers in the classroom. During this year’s visit, we donated one laptop computer installed with Microsoft Office.

We will continue to provide support through the donation of computers, software, and related devices.

Ratankot Village

Ratankot Village is located a 10-minute drive away from Koldaung Devi Secondary School. The village suffered great causalities during the 2015 earthquake. During last year’s trip, we saw houses that were still damaged and people living under simple tin roofs.

 

Many households hadn’t received subsidies from the government during our previous visit, but had received the funds by the time we visited this year. However, the subsidies were unfortunately not enough to rebuild the houses. Families took out loans or borrowed money from their adult children and relatives instead. Others saved money by building their own houses. Many people are repaying their debts by working as farmers and brick carriers.

〈Lives of the children in Nepal〉

This year, we stayed one night at Radha Krishna Community Center, one of the children’s facilities we support through the CheFuKo Foster Project, in order to understand what goes on in the daily lives of the children who live there.

The next morning, the children wake up at 5 and pray for about an hour. Even the trouble-maker Milan (8 years old) is quiet during prayer time.

At 9:30, the children leave the facility and walk about 15 minutes to get to school.

The children attend Joseph High School, a private school that places emphasis on both education and sports.
Thanks to the donations from our supporters, the children of Radha Krishna Community Center are able to attend this prestigious school. According to the principal, the children had some trouble keeping up at first, but are beginning to acclimate.

Our research into the lives of the children at Radha Krishna Community Center showed us that children need support to improve their educational environments and foster an interest in learning. Here at CheFuKo, will keep doing our part to support these children.
